Our Team

We are a team of six pathologists and two pathologists’ assistants, bringing more than 30 years of experience.
Alongside general pathology training, our pathologists have fellowship training in the fields of hematopathology (leukemia/lymphoma), cytopathology (cell fluid pathology), and gastrointestinal pathology (liver, upper GI, and lower GI pathology).
In addition, our pathologists participate in multidisciplinary tumor conferences with breast surgeons, colorectal surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons, radiologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists. We also assist in training of tomorrow’s physicians by providing pathology education to medical residents and interns.
Several members of our group serve or have served in key leadership positions in state and national pathology society organizations demonstrating commitment and dedication to the profession and continuous growth.

Pathology Associates of Central Iowa history

Our medical group was founded in 1989 in Mason City, Iowa as Pathology Associates of North Iowa by Dr. Dale Andres. After nearly 15 years of service to MercyOne North Iowa, Dr. Dale migrated south to Des Moines to serve as the chief of pathology and medical director of the laboratory at MercyOne Des Moines. Since its inception, our pathology group has reviewed well over one million tissue specimens.

Fundamental Beliefs

You are our neighbors. We live in your community. We shop at the same grocery stores, attend the same places of worship, and attend community events together. Because of this, we want to be able to look you in the eye knowing that we have done everything in our power to ensure your doctor has all the information they need to provide treatment to make you better.

Your specimen is deeply personal to us. We will not send it to some unknown person in another state that has no personal connection to you. The name after the diagnosis line will always be a fellow Iowan and neighbor.

Andrea H.
Laboratory Director, MercyOne

Dr. Andres has been looking over our lab in Knoxville for the last 10-12 years. He's a valued member of the local medical staff and attends monthly meetings helping to keep us updated on local lab issues as well as presenting information about any MercyOne lab concerns. He's very knowledgeable and easy to get hold of. Our med staff contact him frequently about lab results or path reports and he is quick to respond with a ready answer and ideas for further evaluation if needed. He's been helpful as we've updated our lab and has been a huge resource as we've looked to perform more tests locally over the years. He has good insight regarding what tests could be performed here in Knoxville, and which it's advantageous to send out. Solid, pleasant, reliable, prompt, knowledgeable are the words our med staff used most to describe Dr. Andres.
